overview
Deforestation is a pressing issue globally. Most commonly done for agriculture purposes, it causes destruction on many acres of forest land. The land often becomes undernourished and does not grow the crops it was destroyed for well. There are different methods of deforestation, some people simply chop down the trees and ship them off to be processed somewhere else, or they're burnt down in large forest fires. A large portion of forest coverage has decreased over the years, and the innocent wildlife are taking the hit.
Why we should be concerned
Deforestation has become an extremely present issue. Since 1950, nearly 40% of earth's forests have been destroyed, bringing the forest coverage of earth from 14% to 6%. Scientists have estimated that 80% of all living species exist in the rain forests, including those that may not be discovered yet. Destroying the forests causes extreme drop in biodiversity in these areas, and causes endangerment and in some cases extinction to many species. Deforestation may also affect us negatively in the long run as well, because as we all know trees are our primary source of oxygen. If our oxygen supply is diminished, then all of us understand the consequence.
